Many of the emergency lights use sealed lead acid batteries while the others use Nickel Cadmium batteries. Nickel Cadmium batteries/battery packs are more expensive compared to lead acid batteries. Lead acid batteries usually last one to five years depending upon the operating temperature and frequency of use. However, NiCad batteries lasts longer. If your emergency lights are not easily assessable and you do not want to access frequently to replace them you might consider NiCad battery packs. NiCad batteries do have memory effect where the available back up time may get reduced. Instead of NiCad Nickel Metal Hydride (NMH) batteries are also available. NMH batteries do not have memory effects.
